How Much Does a Cheap Mattress Really “Cost”?31 May
At Mark’s Mattress Outlet, we’ve grown accustomed to getting blank stares from shoppers when we point out the difference between the price of a new mattress and how much that mattress could actually cost. This is because we know that every mattress store across the country can sell you a queen size mattress set for around $500, and the price you pay for a mattress today really has nothing to do with whether or not it turns out to be a good deal in the long run.
The real differentiator is what quality of mattress you’re going to get for that $500. Especially since most mattresses all look very similar on most tv commercials and newspaper ads, how is a consumer supposed to know that they’re really getting the best value possible on a new mattress?
The discussion on price vs. cost really starts getting interesting when you consider that the average lifespan of a mattress is 7-10 years, and a good night’s sleep impacts every single aspect of your daily life. According to the CDC, 30 percent of all adults suffer from sleep deprivation to the point that it has been officially declared a public health epidemic.
Side Affects of Missing Sleep
The graphic to the right addresses several of the medical side effects that can occur from choosing an inferior quality mattress that ends up costing you nightly sleep, but what about all the lost income and productivity that come about from being constantly tired at work (and around your family)?
Studies have shown that, on average, insomnia adds up to about eight days per year of lost productivity at work, and sleeping less than six hours per night affects your performance about the same as going 48 hours without sleep. Eight days per year of lost productivity means that, if you earn $50,000/yr, a lack of sleep is costing you over $1,500 per year at your job. If you’re a couple who earn $100,000/yr combined, suddenly that number jumps to over $3,000 per year. But what’s even more shocking is when you multiply those numbers over the entire lifespan of a mattress, or about 7-10 years. Suddenly the few hundred dollars you thought you saved (by going with a cheap $500 advertised special) seems to have cost you a lot more than that, right?
As stated by the Division of Sleep Medicine at the Harvard Medical School, “the short-term productivity gains from skipping sleep to work are quickly washed away by the detrimental effects of sleep deprivation on your mood, ability to focus, and access to higher-level brain functions for days to come. The negative effects of sleep deprivation are so great that people who are drunk outperform those lacking sleep.”
