gel foam vs. memory foam

Is Gel Foam Better Than Regular Memory Foam?

Before we can really get into a fair comparison of traditional memory foam versus newer gel foam, it’s helpful to first understand a little bit about where memory foam came from in the first place (as well as what it’s made of).

As many advertisers will be quick to point out, memory foam was first introduced by NASA for space missions. Although it first appeared in the 1960s, in recent decades it has become much more popular in consumer products such as pillows and mattresses. Traditional memory foam is made of a petroleum-based substance called viscoelastic, which is known for being incredibly energy absorbent and conducive to the natural distribution of body weight across the entire surface of your bed.

What Chemicals Are in Traditional Memory Foam?

If you couldn’t help get past the word “petroleum” in the previous paragraph, you’re not alone. Studies have found that petrochemical-based traditional memory foam can release up to 61 different chemicals, 18 of which are considered unsafe by multiple state and international agencies. In order to make sure you’re getting the safest and purest variety of foam materials possible in your new bed, we recommend you always look for the CertiPUR-US certified logo. CertiPUR-US is the national leader in guaranteeing that any number of potentially harmful substances weren’t used in making your new bed. Some of these chemicals include formaldehyde, ozone depleters, CFCs, mercury, lead, and other heavy metals.

How Is Gel Foam Different?

Contrary to popular belief, the vast majority of gel foams do not contain layers of liquid gel inside the foam. Instead, small beads of gel are “infused” (or stirred) in with the other ingredients of memory foam. While gel foam will often have a blue-ish color that visually distinguishes it from the traditional beige color of memory foam, both gel foam and memory foam feel quite similar to the touch. The major difference is that gel foam helps dissipate heat better than traditional memory foam. And since 8-10% of people who own traditional memory foam mattresses report heat trapping as a problem, the cooling advantages of gel foam make it a better choice for most.
