How to Be the Perfect Holiday Hostess for Your Guests

When it comes time for holiday entertaining, it’s easy to stress, especially if you’re hosting out of town guests. The most important thing to keep in mind is that if you feel relaxed, so will your company. Remember: the holidays are a time to celebrate, not worry!

A Holiday Hostess Should…

If you’re playing a holiday hostess for a weekend, prepare your home now so you can open your door and greet loved ones knowing they’ll be comfortable throughout their stay.

Stock the Refrigerator. You’ll want your guests to feel like your fridge is theirs. Before they arrive, head to the grocery store and purchase snacks and drinks that are easy to grab whenever they’re hungry or thirsty. Also buy various breakfast essentials so they can choose from a few different options, and keep in mind any allergies that guests have. The last thing you want is for them to have to run to the store and buy their own lactose-free milk.

Create Comfy Seating Areas. In your living or family room, stack magazines for friends and family to browse through, and provide blankets so they can curl up and get cozy. You’ll want them to feel welcome to relax as you work in the kitchen (unless they offer to help, of course!) If children will be staying in your home, set out some books or puzzles that will entertain them during down time.

Make Them Feel at Home in the Guest Bath. We all know how frustrating it can be to open up a suitcase and realize we left toiletries at home. Stock a basket of shampoo, soap, a toothbrush, and toothpaste in the guest bathroom, so your guest won’t need to ask to borrow yours. If you’ve been holding off on using your expensive plush towels, now is a great time to use them!

Provide Cozy Quarters Where They Can Retreat. If there’s one area you’ll want to concentrate on making guests feel comfortable, it’s the spare bedroom. They should feel comfortable going into “their room” to get away from crowds or to take an afternoon nap. Put a new pair of slippers and extra blankets on a shelf next to the bed, along with a few popular books they may want to browse through. Set out a few bottles of water in case they get thirsty at night. Swap out the old, flat pillows with new plush pillows so they can sleep comfortably.
